How to compress an image
- Choose or drop your images.
- Pick a quality, or switch to Target size and enter the KB you need.
- Select Compress, then download the image or a ZIP.
Quality or target size
Quality is quickest when you just want smaller files. Target size is for forms and sites with a limit: the engine finds the highest quality that fits, and makes the image smaller only if quality alone is not enough.
What changes
Images are saved as JPG, which is the smallest format for photos. If a JPG is already as small as the chosen quality allows, you get the original back instead of a larger copy.
Questions about Compress image
Are my images uploaded when I compress them?
No. Scissor Image runs an image engine written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Your images are read from your device into the page's memory, processed there and saved back to your device. The site has no upload endpoint, and its Content Security Policy blocks the page from sending data to any other server.
How small can it go?
Any size from 5 KB. Very small targets need fewer pixels, so the image is scaled down step by step until it fits.
Will my photos look worse?
At quality 75 most people cannot tell the difference on a screen. Lower values give smaller files with visible blocks in fine detail.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It is free, with no account, no daily limit and no watermark added to your images. Because the work happens on your own device, there is no server cost per image for us to recover.
