How to make a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Choose or drop your image.
  2. Select Make thumbnail.
  3. Download it and upload it in YouTube Studio.

The right size

YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels, a 16:9 shape, under 2 MB. The image fills the frame and the edges are trimmed evenly.

Under 2 MB

If the file is larger than 2 MB, use Compress to 200 KB next, from the result screen.

Questions about YouTube thumbnail

Are my images uploaded when I make a thumbnail?

No. Scissor Image runs an image engine written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Your images are read from your device into the page's memory, processed there and saved back to your device. The site has no upload endpoint, and its Content Security Policy blocks the page from sending data to any other server.

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as JPG, PNG or GIF under 2 MB.

Can I choose which part is kept?

Yes: use Crop image with the YouTube thumbnail size, and drag the box where you want it.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, with no account, no daily limit and no watermark added to your images. Because the work happens on your own device, there is no server cost per image for us to recover.
